Engineering Manager, Software Development

The Opportunity 

RAD is expanding! We are seeking a Engineering Manager for our Software Development team that will play a pivotal leadership role within our Engineering division. This position is responsible for defining and driving the trajectory of RAD’s software development function, balancing day‑to‑day operational leadership with longer‑term strategic planning.

In this role, you will lead and influence how software is developed, scaled, and aligned with business priorities. You’ll have a meaningful voice in shaping department staffing, defining the software technology roadmap, and ensuring strong alignment between engineering initiatives and business objectives. Your work will directly support the creation and expansion of software‑driven opportunities across RAD Torque Systems.

The Responsibilities 

People Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, manage, and develop a team of software engineers and related disciplines (e.g., DevOps).
  • Set clear expectations and evaluate performance of direct reports through regular feedback and formal reviews.
  • Mentor and coach team members to support continuous learning, career growth, and advancement.
  • Foster a high‑performance, collaborative, and accountable engineering culture.
  • Improve team effectiveness by advancing development practices, methods, and team cohesion.

Delivery & Project Leadership
  • Own delivery of software initiatives, ensuring work is completed on time, within scope, and to quality standards.
  • Lead and manage software development projects, including cross‑functional initiatives with a strong software component.
  • Identify delivery risks early and work proactively to resolve issues and dependencies.
  • Oversee deployment and evolution of software programs and processes, including security and compliance initiatives.

Department and Strategic Management
  • Establish and enforce software development best practices, coding standards, and quality guidelines.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation, testing practices, and operational readiness are in place
  • Develop and maintain the software technology roadmap in alignment with engineering division strategy
  • Align software department strategy and operations with engineering division objectives
  • Align software department strategy and operations with business objectives.
  • Align software department strategy with compliance and regulatory objectives.
  • Plan software staffing (permanent and outsource) in alignment with software strategy to meet current and future needs.
  • Partner with managers, technical leads and other senior engineers to achieve engineering objectives.
  • Identify, create, define, educate and deploy scalable software development processes.

Strategic Business Planning
  • Align department planning (staff, technology) with business needs and growth.
  • Contribute to longer‑term engineering capability planning in partnership with the Director of Engineering. ​​​​​​​

The Qualifications 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
  • Certified Scrum Master, or equivalent training / practice.
  • P.Eng. certification or eligibility is an asset.
  • 10+ years of relevant professional software development experience (various roles).
  • 5+ years leadership / management experience.
  • A diverse background and understanding of software technologies.
